What is SMRLA, Inc.?

The Southern Maryland Regional Library Association, Inc., SMRLA, is a regional resource center located in Southern Maryland.

SMRLA, Inc., provides services for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.

SMRLA, Inc., is part of a statewide information network that includes libraries and many other information agencies such as schools and local and state governments. Three other regional libraries are located in Western Maryland, the Eastern Shore, and Baltimore.

SMRLA began in 1959 as a regional library with print collections and traditional library services. Today, SMRLA, Inc., is focused on helping Southern Maryland take advantage of the rapidly changing world of information services.

SMRLA's Mission:

SMRLA, Inc. works to ensure that "the citizens of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties will have equal access to information through the efficient, economic, and effective sharing of resources among public libraries and all types of information agencies."

A Checklist of Services:

Information Access - Electronic databases, Internet, local library catalogs, Sailor, state library catalogs, regional databases. A webserver that provides worldwide access to Southern Maryland information.

Information Delivery - Daily delivery between the region's libraries and the State Library Resource Center in Baltimore.

Training - Technology how-to's, staff development, database searching.

Cataloging & Processing - Preparing area library materials for electronic catalog.

Interlibrary Loan -Providing the area with delivery of materials borrowed anywhere in the state and the country.

Special Collections - State government documents, specialized periodicals, community information.

Publications:

Maryland Library Survey - Potomac Incorporated has completed a comprehensive study of attitudes about local public libraries in Maryland for the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association, Inc. (SMRLA) and the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Library Development and Services (DLDS). The results are summarized in this report.
